Top UK cities leading the way in eco gum removal

The impact of chewing gum litter on UK cities

UK councils have made significant progress in tackling chewing gum waste using grants from the Chewing Gum Task Force, dramatically improving their communities through sustainable urban cleaning. In the first three years, the Task Force - funded by major gum manufacturers and administered by Keep Britain Tidy - has distributed £4.88 million in grants to 122 councils, enabling the cleaning of over 3.4 million square metres of pavement, an area larger than 467 football pitches.

Success Stories: UK councils leading the way

Leading cities such as Bradford, Glasgow, Cardiff, and several councils across Northern Ireland, like Mid and East Antrim, have deployed grant funding to purchase cutting-edge, eco-friendly gum removal machines and employ specialist cleaning teams. Bradford Metropolitan District Council has utilised specialist cleaners in busy commercial zones, while Cheshire Council has hired new teams targeting high-footfall areas to maintain lasting street cleanliness.

These grants have also supported innovative public engagement strategies, including behavioural change signage and educational campaigns, which have contributed to up to an 80% reduction in gum litter within two months of implementation, with sustained improvements observed after six months. Councils like Rushcliffe consistently secure funding to enhance their gum removal efforts, reflecting increasing momentum and success.

These initiatives restore city pride and support local economies by creating cleaner, more welcoming public spaces, but also align with UK sustainability goals using pH-neutral detergent cleaning technologies that reduce water consumption and carbon emissions.

Continuing progress with eco-friendly solutions

The ongoing programme exemplifies how council-led innovation combined with strategic funding is shaping a cleaner, greener future for UK urban environments. Councils are encouraged to explore eco-friendly gum removal equipment and professional solutions to continue these achievements.
